Tambour Track Sizing

How To & CalculatorsDavid Wertheimer14 Comments

If you are making a tambour door - think roll-top desk - there are some critical relationships between the size of the slats, the size of the tenon, and the minimum radius that can be supported as the door slides around corners and contours. The rules-of-thumb and anecdotal experiences I found online did not tell the complete story which led to a brief panic in my project. With some pen & paper, I was able to translate an understanding of the geometry to a quick adjustment, and to a concrete equation which provides some guidelines for anyone building their own tambour door.

Our Planet at Risk This Election

Vote. Get engaged. Donate. Write letters. Never has your voice been more critical. With America in flames and threatened by multiple early hurricanes and flooding; with our democracy under attack by an administration that is actively working to suppress the vote and delegitimize a potential loss at the polls; and with the philosophy of liberalism in decline as our president coddles autocrats, violently attacks protestors and encourages others to do the same, it’s no overstatement to say our country - and due to the nature of climate change (or inaction) - and our planet is at risk.

Hyper Local Steampunk Flight Tracker

Technology & SteampunkDavid WertheimerComment

The story of a hyper-local steampunk flight tracker, with a software-defined ADS-B radio, lots of custom software, some beautiful walnut veneer (and solid walnut) custom cases, and hours and hours of love. All this to drive a “splitflap display”, one of those nifty-but-noisy messageboards you occasionally see in transportation hubs, like San Francisco’s Ferry Building or airports and train stations across the world.
